My grandmother worked for the government of India in the Office of the Accountant General. She started working right from the time when she was in college while undergoing her graduation program.

When and where did your grandparents do the job?

My grandmother was born and brought up in upper Assam. This area is known for the tea gardens. This part was remote and there was no scope for higher education, therefore my grandmother along with my uncle shifted to the capital city of Meghalaya called Shillong. There, she enrolled in morning college as she was keen on working. She got the job when she was in her second-year of college.

She continued this job all through her life till her retirement. At first she worked as an accounts clerk but after a few years, she was promoted to the position of section officer. She retired as department head.

What was the job?

Our grandparents were of the time when things were simplified and life was easy going as compared to today’s busy life. My grandmother turned her passion into a profession at the age of 52. All thanks to my grandfather who supported her. She loved to weave fabrics, embroider them, and make different patterns on clothes. So, my grandfather set up a small unit to let her do this with full enthusiasm.

When and where did your grandparents do the job?

He set up this unit in the basement of their house during their time when I was young. Whenever I used to go to their house, my grandmother showed me her pieces of woven fabric and they were amazing. She stitched different kinds of pillow covers, dresses and even blankets. Slowly and steadily, she started selling these at nominal prices amongst her friends and to her amazement people loved it and sent their known ones to buy these things.

Her work got appreciated everywhere and by word of mouth a lot of people started coming and my grandfather hired a team of weavers to help her out with the stitching of bedsheets, dresses, and whatnot. Her embroideries on the shirts and sleeves were simply amazing. She made one shirt for me as well with beautiful embroidery.

How long did he or she do the job?

She continued with this work of hers till she was in her late sixties and expanded her work because of the love and support she got from her near and dear ones. She proves that talent never goes wasted and if one is passionate about something, success comes to them at their doorstep.

Explain how you think about this job.

I felt proud of her as to what she did, she did with full dedication and precision.

What was the job, when and where did your grandparents do the job?

I think the generation of my grandparents was cut from a different cloth when compared to my generation. Their zeal to work and their perseverance used to be ten times more than what we have today. I can say this because I grew up watching my maternal grandma work through all her life, till she was 79. She was a nurse who went on to get trained in academia, and worked as a nursing professor in a local nursing school in her district.

How long did he or she do the job?

She worked as a trainer to those young nursing aspirants from the time she was 62 till her body couldn’t work anymore at 79.

Explain how you think about this job.

I have met many of her students who are now working as nurses in various hospitals. My grandma passed away in 2023. At her funeral, there were so many colleagues that showed up from her days as a nurse, but many of her students also turned up. I spoke to them and realized how fun my grandma used to be as a teacher and had a great impact on the lives of students. I think I will always consider her a huge example of a woman who never stopped working purely because she was passionate about her profession and wanted to make other students feel the same passion about it. That kind of emotion towards work is something I’d like to develop some day too.

What happened and when it happened?

Nowadays almost everyone is glued to their smartphones, making it seem like an extension of our bodies. I used to detest this about everyone around me and even considered becoming old-school and switching back to a smaller cell phone with just the calling feature. However, in March 2024, I got a reality check and realized how important a smartphone can be. I was out with my friends when a client from work called me up for an extremely urgent work. Even after multiple attempts to explain to them how I couldn’t possibly do it as I was out of my house, they were insistent due to the emergency they were facing.

How important the cellphone/smartphone was

It was my smartphone that ultimately saved their day and mine surely. I quickly downloaded an application on my phone after searching for the best video editor. I edited a video for my client and then quickly sent it across. That day my smartphone helped me gain some internal appreciation as well from my work team.

And explain how you felt about the experience

This all led me to realize that if I had shifted to a cell phone, my boss would have thought that I wasn’t capable of handling emergencies and my client would have also lost out on presenting well for their company executives. Since then, I’ve become a bit more grateful for this technology.
