What skill did you learn?

The skill that I learned in my childhood days was the art of designing Mehendi on the hands of people. Mehendi is a powder that is derived from Myrtle shrub and after the leaves are plucked and powdered, a fine paste is made by adding water and essential oils.

When did you learn?

As far as I remember I was just 10-12 years old and I started learning this from a native teacher near my home as she was a famous beautician and artistic designer. She really helped me a lot in learning the basic tactics that started from drawing to actually applying it on a human hand.

How did you practice and develop this skill?

I started practicing regularly firstly in the art book and then I use to serve free service to all the kids in my society. This way the kids were extremely happy to see the fine tattoos I used to make on their hands and in return I got a chance to polish my skills to make it an excellent art.

Why do you think it’s essential to learn such skills?

Learning any form of art is essential in life because it enhances the creativity that is deep inside the human heart and mind. I feel it should be encouraged to all students, and children to indulge in any art form they like because it will bring in joy, excitement and thrill to their tender minds. Also, in today’s technological age it will help in reducing the screen time and also help in the development of fine and gross motor skills.

What skill was it ?

During my school years I learnt the craft of candle- making. We were taught this craft in the 7th grade. Candle-making was far more trickier than any other activity I had learnt before. It required a lot of patience and precision.

How did you learn it ?

My teacher in school Ms. Ahmed taught and helped us master this skill. Scented decorative candles cannot be made with the help of regular dices which are available in the market.  To make these candles, one needs paraffin wax and colours. One needs to use different techniques to beautify these candles.  For example, one can try frosting with forks or can make flowers and petals by rolling hot wax into shapes. These candles then turn out to be nothing short than mini art pieces.

Do you think it to be an important skill?

The craft of making scented and decorative candles is a wonderful way to relax yourself and it is also soul satisfying. Once I managed to master the technique of turning a simple item as a candle into an exquisite object, I felt elated. I had made about seven such candles as a part of my SUPW (social useful potential works) and I managed to sell them all in the school annual fair.

What skill did you learn?
Learning different skills is an important part of life. It helps in umpteen ways. One skill that I learnt in my childhood is the skill of active communication. This skill was taught to me by my father.

When did you learn the skill?
I learnt this skill when I was around 11 years old. Since I was a shy and quiet child, my father always encouraged me to talk to people in social settings. Due to this encouragement I was able to slowly open up to people and make relationships and friendship connections

How did you practice and develop this skill?
Upon becoming slightly more vocal I started to put myself in situations that I felt were uncomfortable and out of my comfort zone at the time. I tried to speak to as make people as I could and learn about them.

Why do you think it’s essential to learn such skills?
It is very essential to learn such skills, even though they may not seem very relevant, in today’s time making social relations is extremely important. As I started attending college I learnt to make good relationships with teachers and fellow  students and realized how significant it is to have like minded people around you.
