Calculations are an integral part of our lives. There is no denying this conviction that calculations are an integral part of our lives. I recently had an instance in my mathematics exam where I was not allowed to use a calculator.
Where was it?
Since the exam was held in my school so I was bound to obey the rules and do calculations by myself. The calculations were no doubt lengthy.

At first I felt hopeless and thought of giving up but then the thought of doing calculations with pen and paper striked in my head and I somehow completed my exam.
How did you feel about it?
Honestly at first I felt frustrated but when the calculations were going smoothly, I gained confidence and felt positive. I was able to complete the exam well in time.

When was it?
So this reminds me of the time when I felt that my mathematics skills came as a rescue. I would like to share the incident, when phones were not as accessible as they are now. I was small and must be around 8-9 years old, when I went to the market with my mother to buy our monthly groceries.
Where was it?
There was a departmental store nearby our house, which was unfortunately closed. So, we decided to visit another random one. After all our purchases when the shopkeeper handed over the bill, we were shaken up to see a whopping amount of Rs 4000, as calculated by the cashier. We were pretty sure that we did not buy many items to cost this amount.
How did you do it? & How did you feel about it?
I asked for the bill and started calculating the price of all 40 items in the list, in spite of getting an assurance from the shopkeeper of the bill being the correct one. It did take me a little long as I had learnt addition of such huge numbers lately, but I did it on a new sheet of paper matching the old one. To everyone’s surprise there was a difference of 1900 in the amount. Looking at this fraud, all the customers yelled and scolded the shopkeeper. But somewhere I felt so proud of myself for being so quick and witty. Everyone appreciated me for my alertness and presence of mind.

What was it ?
Maths was not one of my favourite subjects so often I would use my father’s calculator on the sly to complete my home work. However, as you go to higher classes you cannot avoid long calculations and difficult sums and in the exam hall one cannot carry a calculator. Well as I recall clearly, during my 9th standard, there was a particular chapter of statistics which had difficult sums. I was dreading this chapter as the half-yearly exams were just round the corner.
When was it ?
That year fortunately I had a very good tutor who taught me easy ways to attempt difficult sums. He taught me tricks to solve lengthy calculations in a short time. Despite the help, I was unsure if I would be able to solve those sums without a calculator.
How was the experience ?
On the day of the exam as I scanned the whole paper my worst fears came true when I saw that sums from the same chapter were included in the question paper. Although not very confident, I still attempted the sum as it was of 8 marks. I divided the lengthy calculation into parts and managed to solve it without a calculator. I was confident that I had solved it correctly. To my surprise later, I came to know that I was the only one in the class to get it correct.
