Last week while travelling in the Delhi Metro to meet a friend, I overheard a conversation that hasn’t quite left my mind yet.
What was the person talking about?
Unlike most days, the metro was pretty empty. Everything was quiet. Everyone was busy scrolling through their phones. That silence got disrupted quite quickly for me when the female passenger sitting beside me got a call. Within a few minutes of answering the call, she started discussing how running away from her house for love is not the right thing to do and abandoning her family is not a comfortable decision for her. I tried my best not to eavesdrop, but it became impossible to do so.
And explain how you felt about hearing the conversation.
I increased the volume of the music I was listening to, but since that also didn’t help, I just switched to a different seat. While it did feel slightly funny at first, it felt wrong to listen to someone’s conversation which was as private as that. I couldn’t stop thinking about it the entire day and was filled with intrigue as well. Now I just hope things got sorted for her.

Last Sunday, I was at McDonald’s, standing in the long queue to place my order when I overheard two young girls talking to each other about how bored they were of eating at McDonald’s.
What was the person talking about?
I wouldn’t usually eavesdrop but they seemed like they were in their early teens and that got me interested in the topic of their conversation. One of them kept droning on about the lack of variety in the food options there and the chaotic management of the franchise. She kept comparing it to another famous fast food chain named Louis Burgers, which is on the costlier side of the pricing scale.
And explain how you felt about hearing the conversation.
I was stunned by listening to all this because back when I was their age, I could hardly eat packaged chips, let alone burgers from fast food chains. It made me realize how different the world is today where teenagers are like adults in so many ways due to their early exposure to many things. After hearing their conversation I also chuckled a little because I also realized that I still think of McDonald’s as a luxury on most days while they clearly made it sound like a local food joint.
