When was it, who you made the promise to, and why did you make this promise?

I am not a person who usually makes tons of promises honestly. That’s purely because I have the memory of a goldfish and forget most things. Forgetting promises would be quite hurtful so I feel it is best to avoid them. That being said, there’s one promise that I have stood by that I made to my childhood friend back when I was probably around 11 or 12 years old. I had borrowed her favorite notebook at the time and she made me promise that I’d never give it to anyone else or discard it once it was used up. Considering how the entire notebook’s cover was painted over by her, I made the promise without much thought.

And explain how you felt about it.

As I said, I am not someone who makes promises but this is probably one of the few promises I have made in my life that, till date, do not make me feel burdened. I still have that notebook with me and keeping this promise has become a cherished memory now because of how it has helped me hold on to an innocent friendship as well. My friend and I still gush over how cute it was back then and how precious it is to still have this friendship and the notebook as well.

I have a passion for cooking and I love cooking for my friends and family. A few weeks ago, I shared a glimpse of a dish I had cooked on my social media account. The next day at college, a classmate of mine who is a native of another city came up to me and told me that the dish looked exactly how his mum cooks it. He fondly spoke about his mum’s cooking and I could see how emotional that made him feel. Sensing the homesickness in his voice, I promised him that I’d cook the same dish again and get it just for him soon. He was quite happy but I could see that he didn’t believe me and thought it was just a polite response from my end.

And explain how you felt about it.

The next morning, I woke up early and cooked that dish with all my heart for him. When I opened the lunch in front of him, he was elated. I could see it in his eyes and the smile that went from ear to ear. He immediately gave me a hug and started eating like a famished child. It was one of the best feelings in the world, seeing him so happy. And since then, whenever I make something special, I take some for him as well.

When was it and who you made the promise to?

When I was in my 12th standard, I had the opportunity to join a yoga camp for a fortnight. At first, as with all young teenagers, I too joined just for fun. To my surprise, within those fifteen days, I saw a marked change in my concentration levels. Also I felt I was calmer and more in control and that’s when I promised to myself to exercise every morning without fail.

Why did you make this promise?

When I joined the yoga camp, the first lessons were about how our body functions and what happens when we take deep breaths or meditate. Also, within the first few days, I even could bring down the pain in my ankle, which had been bothering me for the past few months, after I suffered an injury during my long jump practice.

And explain how you felt about it.

In our biology classes, we were taught about the organs and how it functions but none of the lessons exactly defined how we can keep the organs healthy. There were a few lessons on healthy diet and the role of vitamins and minerals, but that too, I felt was limited information. However, after I joined the yoga classes, I saw a marked difference in my overall health, and to this day, I practice yoga every morning.
