What do you share?

I shared my room long back in my childhood days.

Who do you share with?

I shared it with my cousin’s sister as she came to stay with us to complete her bachelor’s degree from a college in our city.

Why did you share it?

I shared it with her as she was very dear to my father and he did not want her to live in the hostel. We spent a lot of time together and learned so much being together.

And explain how you felt about sharing it.

In the initial days, it was really disturbing sharing wardrobes, bed, and then the washroom, however, she knew to maintain things in a very organized manner which later I enjoyed and captured that good habit of hers. The more time we spent together the more it was merrier. She often came and narrated her college instances and the fun she used to have with her classmates and friends. We still cherish all the memories we made together reading books, watching movies, listening to music, and learning to cook food from my mother. Being a single daughter of the house, her homecoming was a blessing to me as I could cherish the happiness of having a sibling.

What was it?

When I first came to the city of Delhi I was living in a small apartment near my college. It was a one-room apartment with an attached kitchen and toilet. Although not very spacious, there was enough space to move about and keep my things. However, my cousin who had also enrolled in a college in the city could not find any suitable accommodation, so she had to shift with me.

Why did you need to share it with others?

Once my cousin shifted, we did face space constraints but we somehow managed. Moreover, things became a bit more manageable as we could now divide the cost between us. Therefore I was no longer stretched at the end of the month and was left with enough funds. Also, we shared the household chores so the burden was no longer on a single person. We took turns to make food depending on our class and exam schedule.

Explain in what way it affected your life.

At first I was slightly worried that space constraints might be an issue but we quickly settled on the new arrangement and it was beneficial for both of us. Since we were both alone in the city we found support in each other. Also during sickness or when in any problem we felt reassured as we knew we had one another to fall back on. During weekends or holidays we did not feel lonely and often went out and had fun together.
