When the festival occurs?

Festivals carry a lot of significance in the Indian culture. Every festival is associated with some or the other historical significance. I have been born and brought up in India. India is full of cultural traditions and is very diverse in terms of rituals and festivals. One such festival which is very famous and is of utmost importance is Diwali. It occurs mostly in the last week of October or first week of November.

 What you do during it?

Diwali is known as the ‘festival of lights’. People decorate their houses with lights and candles. During this festival we eat different types of sweets and most importantly we preach our Gods with our family. People visit religious places and make their offerings.

What you like or dislike about it & and explain why this festival is important?

It is one of the most important festival in Hindu tradition. This day is marked by the return of the Hindu God, Lord Ram, who came back after being in exile for 14 years. The story behind it is as heart touching as the exile in itself is. The day is celebrated with great enthusiasm and religiousness.

Introduction

India being the land of diversified cultures, is a home to people belonging to many religions living together. And as an Indian we have this privilege of celebrating many festivals throughout the year.

When the festival occurs

As there are many festivals that are celebrated with pomp and show, Diwali is the festival which is celebrated with great enthusiasm. It usually comes between October end and mid-November.

 What you do during it.

Diwali is popularly known as the festival of lights. We decorate our houses, workplaces and our temples too with lights and flowers specially using marigolds. Diyas, which are basically small oil lamps, usually made of clay, are lit all over the place. There is a pooja that is performed in the evening hours which spreads peace and positivity all over. Everyone in our family buy new ethnic clothes and exchange gifts too with our friends and relatives.

What you like or dislike about it.

There are a couple of activities that people do during this festival that I dislike. Firstly, that inspite of being a pious festival, there a few people who ruin its auspiciousness by betting, playing cards, drinking alcohol. Another thing I would like to mention is the bursting of crackers. I personally believe it is sheer wastage of money and creates pollution too. It does not have a single advantage of it being performed at any occasion.

and explain why this festival is important.

Diwali is indeed an important festival of our country. It gives an opportunity to everyone to be together with their family lit diyas, decorate their houses, perform prayers and worship to god. It spreads positivity and prosperity everywhere. This is the festival which everyone looks upto the entire year.
