Once during Durga Puja, my aunt gifted me a black saree. Although I do not wear sarees on a regular basis, sometimes I like to wear traditional attire. I had shared with her my desire to wear a black saree, so she made it a point to buy one for me.
Describe the piece of clothing
It was a muslin black saree with a pink and orange border. It had beautiful hand-stitched motifs with intricate patterns. My aunt who loves sarees and has a wonderful collection herself, bought the saree from the weavers village where one can find a wide variety of sarees. I remember visiting this place once with her and was amazed at the huge range available. In that village, most of the families work as weavers using traditional looms. Sometimes it takes months to complete a piece as they are painstakingly hand-embroidered over months.

I paired the saree with a fuchsia pink blouse and silver jewellery. I think I looked quite good in it and everybody kept asking me where I bought the saree from. I also wore the saree to the college fest. There too, everybody complimented me on my saree look.

Just 3 days ago, my mother gave me an Indian two-piece apparel as a birthday present. She wanted me to get the alterations done to it in time so I could wear it on my birthday, but the garment is definitely not meant to be worn on a birthday. It’s a traditional Indian co-ord set that has a top and a trouser, called salwar-kameez regionally. The design detail is quite intricate and the work on it is shiny. Considering that, it is more suitable for greater occasions of grandeur, like the Indian festival called Diwali. So I have decided to get it altered once Diwali is around the corner. I’ll don it at other Indian festivities as well.

My mum knows I hate it when people give me clothing because I am pretty uptight with my choices. However, she has been asking me to buy something traditional since I keep repeating the same wardrobe at every event. Hence, she decided to gift me the apparel because she knew I’d not shop for myself. Ultimately, I am glad she bought that for me because it’s quite pretty and the color would look quite good on me. So, I am excited to wear it to celebrations, especially because now I’ll get to wear something new.

What happened and when it happened?
Nowadays almost everyone is glued to their smartphones, making it seem like an extension of our bodies. I used to detest this about everyone around me and even considered becoming old-school and switching back to a smaller cell phone with just the calling feature. However, in March 2024, I got a reality check and realized how important a smartphone can be. I was out with my friends when a client from work called me up for an extremely urgent work. Even after multiple attempts to explain to them how I couldn’t possibly do it as I was out of my house, they were insistent due to the emergency they were facing.
How important the cellphone/smartphone was
It was my smartphone that ultimately saved their day and mine surely. I quickly downloaded an application on my phone after searching for the best video editor. I edited a video for my client and then quickly sent it across. That day my smartphone helped me gain some internal appreciation as well from my work team.
And explain how you felt about the experience
This all led me to realize that if I had shifted to a cell phone, my boss would have thought that I wasn’t capable of handling emergencies and my client would have also lost out on presenting well for their company executives. Since then, I’ve become a bit more grateful for this technology.
