What is a band score in IELTS?

The candidate is marked on a 9 Band scale in every module in IELTS and then the final band
score is taken out from the average of all the bands in IELTS .Your performance on the final
test day in each of the module in IELTS is marked as a band score on a scale of 1, which is
the lowest to 9, which is the highest. The Overall Band Score is the average of the marks of
four sections, which is rounded to the nearest whole or half band. The scores per section
are weighted equally in the IELTS Exam.
For example, if the average of the four sections ends with .25, then the overall band score is
rounded up to the next half band, and if it ends in .75 then the overall band score is
rounded up to the next whole band.
The different band scores portray different skill levels. Band score 9 shows that the person is
an expert in the language skills, Band score 8 depicts very good performance, Band 7 Good,
Band 6 Competent, Band 5 Modest, Band 4 Limited, whereas Band 3 shows that the
person’s skill level is extremely limited, Band 2 shows Intermittent level, Band 1 , a non user
and 0 means that the test is unattempted.
