With escalated advancements in the automotive industry, people started buying vehicles in access, even if their cost was extremely high. Constructing more roads and widening them seems to be a favorable option by a group of masses, while others favor more trains with increased railway lines.

Few people think that trains and subway lines would aid in solving the problem of traffic. To begin, with the escalation in traffic from the last decade, air and noise levels have crossed their ceiling numbers and are now a concern for the Government. To reduce the constantly increasing pollution, trains should be built. Moreover, every home has at least one automotive vehicle in the current era. There is no space left on roads for vehicles and sometimes owing to high traffic people get stuck in long jams for hours. A typical example would be thousands of cars on Delhi highway connecting to Gurugram where people wait for hours to cover some kilometers of distance.

In contrast, although traffic has escalated over the time, if the Government will focus on multiplying the traffic lanes and dividing vehicles as per their respective lane, that would definitely solve the problem of traffic in India. Building road networks on vacant lands, especially in urban developing cities seems to be a crucial factor in solving the problem. To exemplify, a newly built Delhi to Chandigarh highway would take 2 hours for a person to cover 250 km which was around 6 hours a year ago and this has been done utilizing empty land. In my opinion, trains should be more effective as compared to widening the roads because this not only reduces pollution but saves time for the populace. It helps in reducing the pollution levels significantly.

To reiterate, although wider roads are beneficial, trains could solve the majority of the problems if we look at the larger picture.

Traffic is a growing problem in some cities and there is a debate to solve this problem. A few people believe that authorities should build other modes of transport lines such as train and subway lines to minimize traffic congestion whereas, some people believe building more and wider roads is a better solution to decrease traffic. While both approaches have merits, I strongly believe the investment in public transport is the more sustainable and effective.

On the one hand, public transport can help to move more people quickly as compared to the car. Train and subways have proper lanes which reduce traffic as they follow a systematic pattern. Moreover, the speed of these public transport is faster and quicker which helps people to reach their destination within a particular time. For instance, Delhi is a city which has serious issues of traffic congestion. However, the Metro became the most favorable and was chosen by the population of Delhi as the Metro connected the whole city.

On the other hand, construction of more and wider roads can provide immediate relief from traffic. It not only helps to provide a better road system but also proper systematic signs and symbols which prevent people to not to getting confused, which avoids further unwanted congestion. For instance, the construction of highways like the Dwarka expressway is of 8 lanes which not only decreases traffic but also time saving.

To conclude, a balance between both the provided solutions can help to reduce traffic congestion. However, building public transport is time-saving, less land consumption, is a faster mode as well as carries more people which is a better solution to reduce traffic.

Many are of the opinion that government should focus on developing trains and subways, others think that roads should be widened to reduce traffic congestion. In my opinion, more than one approach is required to tackle problems related to traffic.

To commence with, public transportation like trains and subways should be built on priority basis as population is increasing in urban centres. Developing such facilities would help to ease traffic making daily commute easier. Furthermore, to take off vehicular congestion from roads it is important to develop alternate modes of public transport.

It may also be noted that most cities, suburbs and far flung areas are connected through roads. Therefore, roads need to be widened so that vehicles of all sizes can ply smoothly. Moreover, in this present era, more people own  cars, scooters and bikes. Vehicular population on roads are now much higher than before. If roads are not widened it would lead to unprecedented traffic jams and commuting would be a nightmare.

In conclusion, while widening or building more roads can be one of the solutions however, other measures like introducing more number of trains or developing the subway would go a far way in easing traffic congestion.
