What kinds of problems do they face ?

In most cities there are a lot of open markets, stand-alone shops as well as malls. Shoppers can shop in any of these markets according to their requirements, choice and budget. While shopping, customers face multiple problems related to size, fit or design.

What are the major areas of concern ?

People who shop in open markets often face problems due to the unavailability of trial rooms. One has to buy the piece of clothing just by looking at it. Often they have to make additional trips to change the garment. Further, in open markets, although the products are cheap, the quality is compromised. Alternatively, in malls, although the quality is good but the prices of products are steep and often there is no personnel on the floor to help in case one has issues with the product.

And explain how these problems can be addressed

In open markets, often the street side vendors display their items on the roads making pedestrian movement difficult. The authorities should ensure that each shop has a designated corner and for the street-side hawkers, there is a separate area. In departmental stores too, there should be atleast one personnel in each section to help the customers.

When it happened?

Purchasing things online has become a trend as people find it easy to buy things online as it is convenient for them. Few months back, I purchased a laptop for myself as my old laptop stopped working and I was in dire need of a laptop due to my work.

What you bought?

I bought a new HP Laptop online as I was getting an amazing deal on Amazon. I was happy as I got a 40% discount on the purchase.

What problem you had?

As soon as I switched it on, I saw some lines on the screen and it was so disheartening to open a new device to find out that it was not functioning properly. It turned out to be defective.

I switched off the laptop and tried to switch it on multiple times but to no avail. The problem kept recurring and I decided to call customer care. First no one picked up. Finally, when I got through, they said they would exchange the same product.

But a few days passed by and no exchange was initiated. When I called again, they said the same laptop was not available and I had to choose another. Though they apologized for the same, it was unfair as previously they said it would be exchanged and now it had to be some other laptop. The apologies did not matter now as my time got wasted and I had to choose another laptop which had less features as that was the only one available at the same price.

I realized that day that whenever I would want to make a purchase of electronics, I would always go to the centre and see for myself, so that there would be no last minute hassle

When it happened and what you bought.

I detest shopping for clothes but it’s the one thing that becomes quite inevitable at times. Last month, I had to buy some clothes for work since I realized that my current clothes have started looking a bit tattered. I decided to get some high-quality clothes this time around and decided to shop at a premium global store named H&M. I desperately needed a pair of trousers for work and I bought two pairs.

What problem you had

But buying those two pairs of trousers became one of the most frustrating shopping experiences I’ve had. The sizing at the brand was completely different from the sizing of the brands I usually shop from. While one size fit me perfectly, the same size was loose in another trouser style. This led to me having to go and try every single kind of trouser, in different sizes.

And explain how you felt about the experience

I usually take a maximum of an hour to shop for clothes, but that day, I ended up spending almost 3 hours because of the back and forth to the trial rooms and the sizing confusion. This led me to be so frustrated that I decided to never visit the store again. I feel shopping experiences should be easier for everyone, not confusing in something as basic as sizing. I think for a long time, I will avoid going shopping now.

Describe a time you used your Cellphone/Smartphone to do something important

What happened and when it happened?

Nowadays almost everyone is glued to their smartphones, making it seem like an extension of our bodies. I used to detest this about everyone around me and even considered becoming old-school and switching back to a smaller cell phone with just the calling feature. However, in March 2024, I got a reality check and realized how important a smartphone can be. I was out with my friends when a client from work called me up for an extremely urgent work. Even after multiple attempts to explain to them how I couldn’t possibly do it as I was out of my house, they were insistent due to the emergency they were facing.

How important the cellphone/smartphone was

It was my smartphone that ultimately saved their day and mine surely. I quickly downloaded an application on my phone after searching for the best video editor. I edited a video for my client and then quickly sent it across. That day my smartphone helped me gain some internal appreciation as well from my work team.

And explain how you felt about the experience

This all led me to realize that if I had shifted to a cell phone, my boss would have thought that I wasn’t capable of handling emergencies and my client would have also lost out on presenting well for their company executives. Since then, I’ve become a bit more grateful for this technology.
