What kind of place it is ?

While India, especially Delhi has a lot of places of historical importance however, Qutab Minar is an iconic structure that is visible from the air as one descends in Delhi. It is a tall minaret in red sandstone; a UNESCO world heritage site built between 1199 and 1220.

Where it is ?

Situated in the old part of Delhi the Qutab Minar is built inside a courtyard surrounded by carved columns which are ruins from Hindu and Jain temples. There are lush green grounds around the monument. This site is open to visitors all through the day.

What does it look like and what is the significance of this place ?

It is a tall minaret in red and grey sandstone with a height of about 72.5 metres. It was built by Qutub -ud-din-Aibak in 1192, the first Sultanate of Delhi and later completed by Iltutmish. All the storeys are surrounded by a projected balcony encircling the minar supported by stone brackets.

The word ‘Qutab’ means victory and it was built by Muslim rulers to commemorate their victory over the Rajput rulers of Delhi. It also served as a tower from where calls of prayers were arranged. Also the inside courtyard has an iron pillar which has not rusted through the centuries.

What kind of building was that? And where was it?

I distinctly remember my first family vacation trip, we went to Agra, the city famous for Taj Mahal. Shah Jahan, a Mughal emperor commissioned this structure in love for his wife, Mumtaz, who is said to be the most beautiful lady of that time. Taj Mahal is built from white makrana marble which was bought by elephants from the mines of Rajasthan, and there is marble-inlay work done on every inch of marble, which gives the building an elegant touch. There are four minarets around the main building which is octagonal in shape along with a dome on the top. Shah Jahan wished to be buried alongside her beloved wife in the central hall of the Taj, and hence it is a mausoleum.

When did you visit?

We had a very long family meeting, which was headed by my father, and we decided to visit the Taj Mahal, during my summer break of class 5. I always had a question whether the Taj Mahal is as magnificent as described in text-book or photographs, and my illusion faded away when I actually saw it with my own eyes.

How did you feel after visiting it?

Its beauty is unexplainable, the structure is almost 500 years old and still intact to the soil. Its popularity all around the world is the evidence of its beauty, many world leaders have been a witness of its remarkable architecture, even Princess Diana visited the Taj in the 1990s. The beauty of Taj Mahal speaks for itself as it is one of the ‘Seven wonders of the world’.
