My childhood friend Arman recently went to the UK  to pursue a masters in Design. We grew up together and it was difficult to stay apart, specially in the beginning. We were not habitual of celebrating festivals and special occasions without each other, which is why I missed him more during celebrations and parties.

It was my birthday last week and my parents planned a party to cheer me up. All my friends were invited and I sent an invite to Arman as well. I was deeply saddened when  he refused the invitation because of his hectic schedule. I even got a little angry and did not talk to him for days.

My birthday was on a weekday and therefore I spent the first half of my day in the university. I met my friends and professors, and celebrated with them. While I tried to smile and look happy, Arman’s absence kept bothering me. I even called my parents and tried to convince them to cancel the party as I was not feeling my best but they did not listen.

The thought of celebrating my birthday without my best friend was depressing and annoying.  I went home and got dressed for the party. The celebration was planned at my favourite Chinese restaurant near my home. The entire restaurant was filled with balloons and gifts and the decoration was extremely pretty.

My parents asked me to open a giant gift box and as soon as I opened it, I got the best surprise of my life. My friend Arman was hidden inside the box. His visit was planned by my parents and I was beyond happy to have him by my side. I celebrated my birthday with all my friends and family. We enjoyed the delicious Chinese food.

I was surprised and happy at the same time, and it was a memorable day for me. Arman stayed for a week and we spent a lot of time together. I feel grateful to have a friend like him and I plan to pay him a surprise visit soon.
