What is it?

Khadi is a traditional cloth in my country; it is a hand-spun natural fibre from cotton and is a coarse cloth. It was popularised by MK Gandhi during the freedom struggle as it also represents self-respect and self-sufficiency of India.

When you tried this product for the first time?

I tried khadi clothes for the first time when I was in high school. In the beginning, the shirt was not comfortable, and the fibre was harsh on the skin, but after 2 washes, khadi became soft and was best to wear on hot summer days.

What it is made of?

The khadi cloth is made with natural fibres called cotton. It is hand-spun and is a versatile and environmentally friendly material, and it suits everyone and can be worn in every season.

Explain how you feel about it?

When I wear any Khadi shirt, it makes me stand out in a crowd. This smooth cloth is body-friendly fabric, which prevents allergies or irritations to the skin.

What is it?

In my country, bamboo is found in abundance, especially in the North-east part of India. Many traditional products are made using bamboo, like baskets, handbags, table mats, decorative items and many more.

How are these products made ?

These products are made mostly by the local artisans by hand. The young bamboos are first cut and peeled to get the strips necessary to make such items. Then they are sun-dried and woven to make it. Some of these products have intricate designs and take months to make. In some of the villages, entire families are involved in this kind of work and often it is their main source of sustenance.

Explain why these products are popular ?

These products are very popular among both the locals and foreigners and are shipped to all parts of the country and regularly exported to foreign destinations as well. One can pick up these products in the markets of major cities and in state emporiums as well. These products are very popular as they are hand-made and biodegradable. While some of the products having intricate designs can be expensive, most of these products are reasonably priced.

What is it, when you tried this product for the first time, and what it is made of?

It’s actually an ecstatic feeling to be talking about this because my home country, India, is full of traditional products, be it beauty or even home decor. One traditional product from India that I always recommend everyone to invest in is a Pashmina shawl. It’s made of wool but is unlike any other wool shawl. I remember I visited Dilli Haat, a famous handicrafts and decor market in South Delhi, back in 2002 and touched a Pashmina shawl there for the first time. Believe me you, I remember that softness and warmth till date.

Explain how you feel about it

It is quite expensive so I used to think that it is a trickery by local artisans, but once I got older and traveled to Kashmir, the place Pashmina originates from, I realized that every single penny is worth spending on it. It can protect one from harsh winters with its cozy and warm texture and feel. The best part, however, is that it is extremely useful and durable while being gorgeous. The patterns of Pashmina shawls are so pretty that any attire could get an elevated look with it. Hence, I feel everyone who visits India should try to buy a Pashmina shawl because it is one of the best traditional products from India.

What happened and when it happened?

Nowadays almost everyone is glued to their smartphones, making it seem like an extension of our bodies. I used to detest this about everyone around me and even considered becoming old-school and switching back to a smaller cell phone with just the calling feature. However, in March 2024, I got a reality check and realized how important a smartphone can be. I was out with my friends when a client from work called me up for an extremely urgent work. Even after multiple attempts to explain to them how I couldn’t possibly do it as I was out of my house, they were insistent due to the emergency they were facing.

How important the cellphone/smartphone was

It was my smartphone that ultimately saved their day and mine surely. I quickly downloaded an application on my phone after searching for the best video editor. I edited a video for my client and then quickly sent it across. That day my smartphone helped me gain some internal appreciation as well from my work team.

And explain how you felt about the experience

This all led me to realize that if I had shifted to a cell phone, my boss would have thought that I wasn’t capable of handling emergencies and my client would have also lost out on presenting well for their company executives. Since then, I’ve become a bit more grateful for this technology.
