When and where was it ?
Last year I was visiting my uncle in Kolkata. I was there for five days and my uncle gave me a wonderful tour of the city including his office. He works for the post office which is housed in the GPO building in Fairley place. It is a historic and iconic structure built in the British era in 1774.
What was so unique about this building ?
This majestic white building has a dome-like structure adorning the top. On entering the building, one is happily surprised to find a cafeteria serving all kinds of snacks. The high ceiling and the wide space lends a wonderful ambience to the place. The offices are housed in the upper floors. The ornate doors and bannisters are of a long gone era and the whole place is a work of art.
How was your experience ?
I was in the building for a good two hours while my uncle completed his work. I explored many of the floors and spent time looking through the small museum tucked away in a corner. Stamps from the inception of the post office were showcased here. I had never seen such rare stamps before, so it was a kind of history lesson for me as well.

I have a habit of visiting multiple tourist spots whenever I get time. Fortunately I live in a city like Delhi which has a plethora of public monuments that are quite fascinating, but there is one temple known as the Lotus Temple, which stands out.
What was so unique about this building?
This temple is true to its name because the building is shaped like a lotus, which is a distinctive feature because I have never seen any building shaped so uniquely. The building has multiple petals carved out of marble. And I have heard that after sunset, the building attracts a larger crowd because there are lights that light up the entire temple and even the pathways leading inside the temple, giving it a glowing outline.
How was your experience?
While I was excited to see that myself as well, I couldn’t manage a late evening visit since the temple is farther from my house. So I visited the temple around midday. The heat was at peak at the time, but that same unbearable sun made the temple shine in the centre of the ground. It stood out and looked majestic. The temple also has a lotus shaped water feature surrounding it all around the building which adds to the beauty of it. I had a wonderful time there because the building’s infrastructure from within is also fascinating to observe, and I have always been fond of unique building designs, so I got a chance to explore a different type of building in my city. And since then I have been recommending a visit to the Lotus Temple to everyone I meet.
