What was the course about?

I have always wanted to be a fiction writer as books always fascinated me. With this sole purpose in mind, I decided to enroll in a creative writing course. This was a one-year certificate program conducted by a renowned university.

What did you do during the course?

I took up the course thinking that I can manage it along with my job, as classes were conducted only during weekends. Moreover, I thought that since I could already write reasonably well, it would not require too much effort. However, I was in for a big surprise, as the course was not only exhaustive but each paper had to be researched well. It was impossible to complete the assignments without reference material which required extensive research. The books provided were only guide books on how to prepare assignments but all the material and the writing part had to be completed using additional resources.

And explain why it impressed you a lot

I was highly impressed with the classes as professors from prominent universities conducted the sessions. The discussions on different genres of writing, significance of word-play and innovative ways on how to develop one’s imagination were mind-blowing. Although it took a lot of effort to complete the course, it was worthwhile, as I gained a lot, including friends in the literary world.

What the course was about and where you took the course?

I have been raised in a family where learning new skills has always been a way of life. Be it educational or professional upskilling or something for personal growth, my parents have always pushed me to focus on my development in more ways than one. One of the courses that I had pursued because of this ideology was learning basic Photoshop skills via an online course of 6 classes.

What did you do during the course?

This course was not beneficial for me in a professional manner because my career has no scope of Photoshop skills being useful. I still went for it because personally I like creating art. Over the 6 classes, I learnt the tools available on Photoshop and how I could make use of those tools to create the kind of art I like. I wasn’t expecting much from it but it left me in awe of the trainer.

And explain why it impressed you a lot

Like I said, the expectation was to learn the basics of Photoshop and not to become a professional at it, but the trainer was so thorough with it that I ended up learning more than what I expected. Her idea was to get me familiarized with the entire application because she believed that artists become great when they marry practicing and out-of-the-box thinking. Hence, she covered everything in the 6 classes because she believed the students will take the skills forward and become experts in their own right. I was extremely impressed by this thought and even recommended her course to many people. I will always remember what I learnt on Photoshop because of her.

What happened and when it happened?

Nowadays almost everyone is glued to their smartphones, making it seem like an extension of our bodies. I used to detest this about everyone around me and even considered becoming old-school and switching back to a smaller cell phone with just the calling feature. However, in March 2024, I got a reality check and realized how important a smartphone can be. I was out with my friends when a client from work called me up for an extremely urgent work. Even after multiple attempts to explain to them how I couldn’t possibly do it as I was out of my house, they were insistent due to the emergency they were facing.

How important the cellphone/smartphone was

It was my smartphone that ultimately saved their day and mine surely. I quickly downloaded an application on my phone after searching for the best video editor. I edited a video for my client and then quickly sent it across. That day my smartphone helped me gain some internal appreciation as well from my work team.

And explain how you felt about the experience

This all led me to realize that if I had shifted to a cell phone, my boss would have thought that I wasn’t capable of handling emergencies and my client would have also lost out on presenting well for their company executives. Since then, I’ve become a bit more grateful for this technology.
