What was the Risk?
After completion of school, I applied for  admission in colleges in Kolkata.  However, as I was migrating from a different board and due to a mismatch in dates, admission in most of the colleges was over before I got my marksheet. It was my good fortune that two colleges despite the delay accepted my application. While I got through in one of the colleges, but in the other one, which was my institute of choice, things were pending.

Why did you think of taking the risk?

My parents, relatives and friends, everybody advised me to enroll in the college where I secured admission, but I was reluctant. I was keen on the other college as it was an old and well renowned institute which offered many facilities other than studies. I decided to wait for the second college although I risked losing admission in the first college and eventually a year if this did not work out.  I spent many a sleepless nights during this time and each day of the wait period was an ordeal.

Was it worth taking the risk?

After a long ten days wait, I finally received positive news. The admission was confirmed and within days I started college. The institution offered me a plethora of opportunities both in sports and creative clubs that I would have missed had I taken admission in the other institute.

The wait was worth and the risk I took paid off as I managed to complete my graduation from an institute of repute.

What was it?

I remember my first Model United Nations Conference was the risk that I took. It was just two days before my Unit Test. And I was not at all prepared for my Unit Test, because I focused on winning the Model United Nations Conference. I was very nervous because it was my first attempt. And a very big risk because after it I had my UT.

Why did you take it?

I wanted to enhance my debating skills. That’s why I tried doing an MUN. My teachers recommended me to go for it, because I had participated and won several debating competitions at the inter-school level. And now they told me to make a big attempt.

What was the result?

I worked very hard on that MUN conference. I did not want the teachers to lose confidence in my abilities and that’s why I participated in it. I worked day-and-night and the result was magnanimous. I won the first prize, the Best Delegate Trophy, in my first attempt.

How did you feel about it?

The teachers were very proud of me. And the most amazing thing is that, in the upcoming UT, I also prepared for it and scored the highest marks in the exam. This meant that I had both of the worlds in my hand.

What was the risk?

The biggest risk I took was to invest in Google, which sounds ridiculous in today’s time but this incident occurred when the company had just listed, no one knew a thing, but my friend convinced me to put all I had in the company.

Why did you think of taking the risk?

I liked the concept and what the company was about, but it had just started and the shares were cheap. I was also pretty broke, I didn’t know how I would make it with it and had almost skipped the chance entirely but decided against it.

Was it worth taking the risk?

Yes, the few bits of struggle I had to go through when I made the initial investment seem like nothing compared to the return I have now. When the price shot up, I could not believe it, I had become a millionaire in a night, after the celebrations, congratulations, and excitement, I was still in a tranz, a random decision I made had changed my life, I still can’t believe it, and still, every morning I wake up thinking is the dream over?
